It’s a concern held by countless mothers and young girls alike and it inevitably pops up when I talk about menstrual cups. Can my virgin daughter use a menstrual cup? I’m a virgin can I use a cup? To be honest there is a long and short answer to this question. In short YES. There is no need to be scared by the V word. But there are a few myths out there that complicate this issue a bit. So, let’s dive in!
What makes you a virgin?
Often what we think when we hear the word “Virgin” is someone with an intact hymen, which is quite misleading. A hymen is a thin tissue or membrane which partially closes or covers the vagina. The hymen can be altered or torn by physical activities like horse back riding, riding bicycles, climbing trees, gymnastics, dancing or even falling. Some women are even born without a hymen. But even without this type of activity the hymen wears down and thins over time.
So, if the hymen isn’t it then what is? Though the hymen holds a lot of significance in many cultures being a virgin simply and medically means that you have not taken part on penetrative sexual activity.
What’s the bottom line? Using a menstrual cup won’t make you any less of a virgin.
How old do I have to be to use a menstrual cup?
If you have had a period, then you’re old enough to use a menstrual cup. Of course, there are some things to consider.
- The size of the cup should cater to the anatomy of a younger female… so a smaller cup!
- Are you comfortable enough with your body? While not everyone is ready to take that step boldly a menstrual cup can be quite empowering as you become more in tune with your body and how it works and changes. Boy oh boy is that worth it!
How about some tips for first time users?
Even though this post is written for virgins any first-time user can benefit from the following tips.
- Relax! Anxiety can cause you to tense your vaginal muscles without you even realizing it. Make sure that when you’ve committed yourself to trying your cup for the first time you’re comfortable in mind and body.
- While this one is not a must, I would suggest trying your cup before your period comes. This removes the pressure of having to get it right ‘cause I have no pads, lol. It also helps you to understand your body.
- Lubricate with water or a water-based lubricant if necessary.
- Learn a few folds. Folding your cup is the magic that reduces a golf ball to a pebble. Learn a few folds so that your can try a few and see what works best for you
- Be patient! If you feel discomfort, resistance stop and try again a little later. As with learning anything new you may have to try and try again to get the hang of it. Some users get it instantly some take a few cycles. So be patient with yourself! I promise it’s worth it!
